Our Approach to Dental Care

At Dana Rockey DMD, we serve our patients in the most comprehensive and caring ways possible.

949.642.4632 | 355 Placentia Avenue, Suite 306, Newport Beach, CA 92663

We believe that we serve our patients best when we deliver care in the following way:

  • Understand your health goals and preferred approach to care
  • Base recommendations on your health goals and what’s important to you
  • Discuss treatment and care options that are available to you
  • Approach your care from a whole-body perspective, not just your mouth
  • Focus on achieving and maintaining health rather than simply acting to disease
Wellness-based dentistry is the practice of dentistry in which your total health is taken into consideration. Our focus is on dental health and wellness, not simply treating conditions. In addition to routine dental and esthetic procedures, we focus on achieving and maintaining optimal health. We know from experience that this focus helps our patients lead healthy lives.
Our bodies are made up of systems that are interconnected. The Oral-Systemic Connection refers to the overlapping effects that the oral cavity (mouth), and the rest of the body have on each other’s health. Oral bacteria and subsequent inflammation have been linked to many other conditions such as cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease and preterm labor.
At Dana Rockey DMD, we take a comprehensive approach to your care. In addition to the usual dental screening, we look at a broader range of potential symptoms, test results and observations. We have high standards for diagnosis and treatment – for reduction of oral bacteria that can affect the health of other organ systems.

Dental Sleep Apnea Treatment

What is dental sleep medicine?

Dental sleep medicine is a field of dentistry that focuses on using oral appliances to treat disorders that interfere with your breathing while you sleep.

Dr. Rockey is highly skilled in treating excessive snoring and sleep apnea to improve your sleep quality and your overall health.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a type of disorder that causes you to stop breathing in your sleep. There are three primary types of sleep apnea that Dr. Rockey treats:

Obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea causes breathing difficulties while you sleep due to the relaxation of your throat muscles. As your muscles relax, they obstruct your airway and cause you to stop breathing periodically throughout the night.

Central sleep apnea

Central sleep apnea describes breathing difficulties while you sleep due to dysfunction in the brain signals that control your breathing muscles.

Complex sleep apnea

Complex sleep apnea is a combination of obstructive and central sleep apnea disorders.

Sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime drowsiness and excessive, loud snoring. If left untreated, sleep apnea can increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and other chronic health conditions.

You should schedule a sleep apnea evaluation at South County Sleep Solutions if your partner complains about your frequent snoring or if you wake up during the night choking or gasping for breath.

What dental sleep apnea treatments are available?

To prevent the muscles from obstructing your airway while you sleep, Dr. Rockey offers customized treatment using oral appliances. You wear the custom-fit appliance over your teeth, similar to a sports mouthguard.

The appliance fits snugly in your mouth to keep your jaw forward and ensure your airway remains open throughout the night. The appliance is easy to wear and maintain. Dr. Rockey works closely with you to ensure a custom-fit and that the appliance feels comfortable in your mouth.

Many people who are unable to tolerate the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, which delivers oxygen into your airway while you sleep, can benefit from oral appliance therapy. By stopping your snoring, you’re better able to get a good quality of sleep every night.

If you need a solution for snoring or sleep apnea-related breathing issues, schedule a consultation with Dr. Rockey by calling South County Sleep Solutions today.

Temporal Mandibular Disorder

What is temporomandibular disorder?

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) affects the two joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull. These joints rotate and slide in front of your ears to allow you to move your jaw up and down, side to side, and forward and backward.

Properly aligned joints ensure you can chew, talk, and swallow easily and without discomfort. However, when the temporomandibular joints are out of alignment, it can lead to severe jaw and facial pain.

If not properly treated, the condition can progress and cause a dislocation of your jaw. You may also experience damage to the cushioning cartilage between the joint bones. For some, there’s an increased risk for developing degenerative joint disease, like osteoarthritis, in the jaw, which can interfere with speaking and chewing.

What causes temporomandibular disorder?

The root cause of temporomandibular disorder isn’t always known. You may develop misalignments in your jaw joints because of excess strain that occurs when talking or chewing.

Many people develop TMD because of bruxism, a condition that describes a constant grinding or clenching of the teeth. You may also develop a temporomandibular disorder because of trauma to your jaw, neck, or mouth.

Those who have underlying health issues, like irritable bowel syndrome or fibromyalgia, may notice that their condition worsens their TMD symptoms.

What are the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder?

The most common signs of TMD are persistent soreness or pain in the jaw, especially when you wake up in the morning. Other common side effects of TMD include:

  • Headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Earaches
  • Locked jaw
  • Popping or clicking sensations in the jaw

Those with bruxism may experience increased sensitivity in their teeth or changes in the way their upper and lower teeth come together.

How is temporomandibular disorder treated?

To ease the pain of TMD, Dr. Rockey focuses on nonsurgical therapies. He may initially recommend resting your jaw as much as possible and using over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories.

You may also benefit from learning relaxation techniques to reduce the strain on your jaw joints, and physical therapy to strengthen the muscles that support your jaw.

Dr. Rockey can recommend the use of an oral appliance, like a mouthguard, to reduce the damage that clenching and grinding your teeth can cause.

The available nutritional counseling services can also play a role in treating TMD pain by ensuring your body has the right nutrients to prevent inflammation that contributes to jaw and facial pain.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

What is TMJ?

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a ball and socket structure in your joint that allows you to open and close your mouth. You have one joint on each side of your mouth, in front of your ear. These joints also make it possible for you to:

  • Chew
  • Yawn
  • Talk

When there’s damage to the temporomandibular joint, you may find it difficult to move your jaw without pain or experience a locked-jaw condition where you can’t open or close your mouth completely.

What causes TMJ?

While TMJ is an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint itself, it’s also used to refer to any temporomandibular disorder that affects the health and alignment of your jaw. This disorder can result for no specific reason or due to:

  • Injury
  • Arthritis
  • Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)

You may also develop pain or dysfunction in a temporomandibular joint because of the degeneration of the joint itself, whether due to disease or natural age-related changes.

For some, misalignment in the upper and lower teeth can also lead to complications in the temporomandibular joints.

How is a TMJ disorder diagnosed?

To evaluate the health and function of your jaw, Dr. Rockey may recommend X-rays along with a comprehensive dental exam. He can determine if your pain is the result of the jaw joint or teeth being out of alignment or if it stems from another underlying health condition.

During your exam, Dr. Rockey evaluates the range of motion and flexibility you have in your temporomandibular joints. Based on the physical exam and imaging tests, he can customize a treatment plan to restore your jaw health.

How is TMJ treated?

Initially, Dr. Rockey may recommend heat or ice therapy to reduce swelling in your jaw and ease your pain. You may also benefit from over-the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatories to keep you comfortable.

If you grind or clench your teeth, Dr. Rockey can recommend a custom-fit oral appliance that goes over your teeth to protect them from damage.

You may also be a candidate for physical therapy to strengthen your jaw muscles and prevent additional jaw complications.

If you need relief from chronic jaw pain, schedule a diagnostic evaluation for TMJ with Dr. Rockey by calling South County Sleep Solutions today.
